OIC-Director, NIGS
It is with great pleasure to welcome you all to the 17th NIGS Research Symposium (NIGSCON 2022) with the theme, “Reestablishing Equilibrium, Seizing Opportunities”. The past two years of living amidst the COVID-19 pandemic had indeed been truly life-changing—with perturbations and uncertainties tipping our balance. Despite the challenges, NIGS has endeavoured to deliver in terms of teaching, research, and extension—course packs for remote learning, bridging classes for laboratory and field courses, 85 indexed publications (2020-2022), a virtual NIGSCON, and quick response activities in relation to the Mw 7.0 Northwestern Luzon earthquake last July.
The first NIGS Research Symposium was held in November 1998 under the directorship of Dr. Joselito P. Duyanen. At that time, its main purpose was to feature the latest research activities of NIGS faculty and students as part of their NIGS Research Grant. Later dubbed as NIGSCON, the in-house research symposium has grown and evolved to serve as a platform for geology professionals, early career geoscientists, researchers, and students from various academic institutions and agencies to share their research with the public. With its first virtual offering last year, the two-day NIGSCON attracted almost 400 registered attendees and almost 600 views on Youtube. Such a remarkable turnout indeed highlights the importance of geoscience information in understanding Earth’s processes and addressing societal problems. Just weeks ago, the World Risk Report 2022 released the ranking of 193 countries in terms of calculated disaster risk, with the Philippines emerging at the top spot. Such plight leads us, scientists and researchers in the geosciences, to continuously assess our roles and take action in preparing our communities for the impacts of geological, hydrological, and climate hazards.
And so now in its 17th edition, we are all delighted as we hold NIGSCON in person again after two years, with a theme that is fitting as we again navigate through new challenges and move forward to reestablishing our equilibrium. The success of this year’s NIGSCON and all other NIGS symposia in the past will always be anchored to the commitment and support of our faculty, colleagues, researchers, students, administrative staff, and partner institutions. I would like to express my gratitude and warm congratulations to the Organizing Committee led by our OIC-Deputy Director for Research and Development, Dr. Mario Aurelio, and powered by our dynamic faculty, University Research Associates, and student volunteers.
I wish all the participants a pleasant experience and I look forward to the interesting presentations and insightful discussions.
Padayon at mabuhay ang mga siyentista ng bayan!
Mario A. Aurelio, Ph.D.
Chair, NIGSCON 2022
Warm greetings to the NIGSCON community!

This year, the National Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP NIGS) brings you the 17th edition of the NIGS Conference (NIGSCON), originally conceived to serve as an exclusive yearly venue to present the results of geoscientific research undertaken by UP NIGS researchers, faculty, and students. Since its initial staging in 1998, this event has evolved to be more inclusive and now features research results from outside of UP NIGS, including those from government agencies, industry, and other academic institutions.

The theme this year: “Reestablishing Equilibrium, Seizing Opportunities”, highlights the urge to regain some form of stability in the geoscientific community after the chaos and uncertainties caused by the pandemic, as well as to learn from the difficulties encountered in moving forward. One such challenge is conducting the conference in HyFlex mode, which requires simultaneously holding presentations in an in-person venue with live audience, but at the same time livestreaming the proceedings to online participants in synchronous mode. In this regard, I commend the organizing committee consisting of young PhDs and hard-working University Research Associates (URAs) of UP NIGS, for standing up to the challenge.

This year’s conference edition features a Special Plenary session dedicated to former UP NIGS faculty Dr. Maria Ines Rosana D. Balangue-Tarriela, affectionately called by many as Ma’am Sanna, who passed away a few months ago. In her over 30 years of service to UP, Ma’am Sanna handled classes in mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and earth resources, as well as conducted research in mineral and energy resources exploration and development in collaboration with industry. I wish to thank the plenary speakers, research collaborators of Ma’am Sanna, for accepting to present their work in memory of her.
I extend my sincere gratitude to all presenters, moderators and volunteers, as well as to the sponsors without whose financial assistance, staging this first-ever HyFlex mode NIGSCON which is in itself a logistical and technological challenge, would not have been possible.

On behalf of NIGSCON 2022, I wish to thank the Honorable DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr. for accepting to deliver the keynote address.

Congratulations, NIGSCON 2022! Mabuhay ang mga geologist para sa bayan!
